A few weeks before we moved to the suburbs, I was meeting up with a friend in the city. We were eating lunch in a food hall by Madison Square Garden. At this point, I wasn’t too excited about leaving the fun and sparkly city life. But my husband and I knew it was the right thing to do, especially when it came to the cost of living + space. I was pregnant with my third child, and we were in a small two-bedroom apartment. Plus, we wanted to be closer to family.

I loved everything about the city, except the price tag on the lifestyle.

So one night before moving, I had a dream about our new life, before settling down in the suburbs. I told my friend about it. In my dream, there was a line of parents picking up their kids at school. They all had pickup trucks decorated with the USA flag. Parents were wearing military green t-shirts and very plain, oversized pants. In the back of the truck were camping gear and hunting guns because, in my dream, we were all going camping.

Now, some things are exaggerated about the suburban, as well as the city lifestyle, but there are some — let’s call them stereotypical things — that are as real as they get.
