PETALUMA, California, Oct 1, 2018, Carium: Greg Weidner, MD, FACP, has joined Carium as the Chief Medical Officer (CMO). In this role, Dr. Weidner will provide leadership to Carium’s product design and market strategy, and play a key role in setting the direction of the company. Additionally, he will establish and lead Carium’s multidisciplinary digital-medicine team, comprised of clinical, informatics and behavioral science experts.

Dr. Weidner is a physician innovator and experienced health system leader. Most recently he was the Medical Director, Primary Care Innovation at Atrium Health (formerly Carolinas Healthcare System). At the $10 billion health system, Dr. Weidner led the success of Proactive Health, a transformative, value-based approach to primary care, designed from the ground up to be a patient-first, collaborative, team-based, and technology-enabled healthcare experience. He will continue to practice part-time as a staff physician at Proactive Health.

Dr. Weidner has been a practicing internist and Physician executive at Atrium Health for 23 years. He holds an M.D. from the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry and a B.A. from Cornell University, and completed his residency and chief residency at the University of Virginia. He is Board Certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine and a Fellow in the American College of Physicians.

At Atrium Health, Dr. Weidner has also served as Medical Director for Canopy Electronic Medical Records and Co-Chair for mHealth Patient Engagement. He serves as Medical Director for the Brace Family YMCA, and has been a medical consultant for Edison Nation Medical.

Dr. Weidner has been a member of the HIMSS mHealth Physician Task Force and is a frequent speaker, panelist and contributor to publications and digital outlets. He has been recognized on numerous Best Doctor lists by Charlotte magazine, Charlotte Business Journal and North Carolina Business Journal. For his leadership in innovating healthcare, Dr. Weidner has been twice nominated for Charlotte Business Journal Excellence in Healthcare awards, and was an Atrium Health Teal Acorn award nominee for Innovator of the Year in 2017.

The addition of Dr. Weidner further strengthens the Carium team, whose founders have a track record in building several successful venture-backed technology businesses. “We are honored to have Dr. Weidner on the team,” said Nirav Modi, President at Carium. “We knew very early on that having a physician-innovator of Dr. Weidner’s caliber and commitment to new models of patient-centric health on our team would be a critical driver of our success. While some technology startups attempt to build tools and then try to fit them into the healthcare system, we felt it was essential for Carium to design its solutions with a well-informed clinical perspective from the outset.”

Dr. Weidner is known for his relentless commitment to improving patient experience, and for putting patients at the center of their care. His work to reinvent primary care at Atrium Health and Proactive Health is a testament to his uncompromising belief that healthcare can, and must migrate away from traditional transactional, fee-for-service models. He is an industry thought-leader in the areas of digital health, patient engagement, and innovation that addresses the full spectrum of health, as well as evolving team-based and technology-enabled healthcare models.

“I am excited and energized by the opportunity to join the Carium team,” noted Dr. Weidner. “From our first conversations, it was clear that we share a fervent belief in the potential of empowered consumers, armed with well-designed technology, to be the centerpiece of new models of health and healthcare. Our goal is to be the platform that enables this person-centric, value-driven care revolution to occur.”
