Get Rewarded for Celebrating Greenmas

Reward your conscience, your health & your wallet

Giving is better than receiving, and who better to give back to than Mother Earth?

Earlier this December, the Hong Kong-bred startup (and pioneer of the fashionably conscious dietary movement) Green Monday was just awarded $250,000 for transforming 1.6 Million Hong Kong goers to going vegan. (This generous sum was granted by a Foundation inspired by the ‘late’ creator of Star Trek, the legendary Roddenberry… how cool is that? And right in time for Christmas!)

That’s good karma right there for doing our planet a massive favor.

In the benevolent spirit of Christmas — where we all give back and do good for Earth and its many inhabitants — we’re going to be introducing several startup solutions to help your Christmas parties go green, and gift suggestions for the zero waste life that will put you (closer to) right on the top of Santa’s nice list. Side effects include having your conscience and spirit a little lighter while celebrating Christmas.

Green Christmas Party

Let’s face it, even if you wake up to a Christmas tree drowning in presents every morning, it’s the gatherings of loved ones and long-lost buddies that warm your frosty mornings.

Here are a few startups with services that will fill your bellies with healthy and tasty good cheers.

Snacks — Edgar

Christmas feasts are a cause for celebration, but waiting for the turkey while the buttery herbal aroma slowly wafts out of the oven is admittedly not very fun. At all.

Grab some munchies from Edgar! You won’t have to worry about opening your 67th packet of nuts for your aggressively snacking guests or stocking your bin with plastic wrappings because Edgar offers food in bulk! Also, they source their goodies from responsible, environmentally conscious suppliers - just remember to bring enough containers when you visit them!

Vegetable — Common Farm

“In our 700 sqft farm, 80 kois can support 2000+ plants.” Aren’t those numbers crazy? With a bit of help from technology, Common Farms and Full Nature have fit an entire sustainable ecosystem in their tiny little area.

They provide ultra-fresh, completely organic produce, which might push the price up a bit, but the dedication, the innovation and the quality they provide might just be worth splurging for and supporting this Christmas.

Zero Waste Presents

Reuse, reduce and recycle. The 3Rs every primary school students now recite to their parents whenever so much as a plastic fork is knocked off the table. So, here’s some gifts that promote these “ideals” for environmental friendliness.

Kommon Goods

Presents that promote zero waste aren’t always flashy statements or dramatic lifestyle changes. Kommon Goods creates products that are minimalistic, classy and practical that are made WITH eco-friendly materials, and FOR eco-loving purposes.

Besides reducing waste, they’ve always promised to give 10% of their profits to The Nature Conservancy, one of the biggest environmental NGO that works to “conserve the lands and waters on which all life depends”.

They specialize in bamboo toothbrushes, stainless steel metal straws, and sleek, black tumblers. Go check out their starter pack! Use “GREENXMAS” for 20% off and free shipping!

Livin Farm

According to World Wide Fund, excessive consumption of animal products has resulted in 60% of all biodiversity loss. In fact, going plant-based is better for the environment than driving an electric car — but let’s suggest a happy medium.

Ever thought of growing the protein-packed alternative — bugs? Livin Farm has the world’s first insect-for-food growing kit. The worms eat your food scraps, and you get 10–20 grams of mealworms for food every week, and the cycle continues to infinity and beyond! (What? A healthy investment that will decrease spending? Take my money already!)

City Hydroponics

On the subject of a Green Christmas, why not give someone a farm, smack in their apartment in a high rise building? Take a ‘leaf’ out of Common Farm’s book, and encourage your friends to make some space to grow your own goods! (Go green, grow green. Let’s make this a thing.)

City Hydroponics gives you everything you need to ‘grow’ your ‘vertical farming’ — parts to fertilizers, you can tailor-make your plant patch according to your space.

Honorable Mentions

Gift-a-deed

Besides giving something physical in the spirit of reducing waste (but might potentially pile up and fill your living hole), you can opt to give those resources to someone from a third world country in honor of your friend.

Gift-a-deed is a mobile application that has been featured by the United Nations for the humanitarian solution it ‘presents’. You simply zoom in on its map, and pick a pinpoint, and digitally choose which form of humanitarian aid of your choice.
