In our last article, Eric revealed the Klook’s startup story and shared his tips on running a traveltech startup in Asia. In this article, it’s all about the team culture and how you can be a part of the Klook team.

Klook, a 3-year-old Hong Kong-based traveltech startup that just raised US$60M in Series C funding, has gathered US$96.5 million to date from investors in 4 rounds. It is safe to say that Klook is one of the city’s most successful startup. While there is no one-size-fits-all formula to success, every successful business is powered by a great team.

The team behind the startup idea

No matter how brilliant your idea is, execution is ultimately the one thing that determines the success of your startup, and that responsibility rests on the shoulders of the startup team.

A strong team culture is essential to a company’s ongoing success and member satisfaction. However, as the team grows bigger, it gets more difficult to keep the team culture.

As a team of 400, how can Klook ensure all team members are aligned with the company culture and values?

“What makes a startup charming is the fluid cross-team communication with shared values and goals. We are maintaining the same vibe and momentum that Klook has since day one, which also has contributed to our robust growth,” Eric said. The co-founder pointed out they have launched programmes to facilitate internal communication. While local teams can add their own flair to the team culture, subtle guidelines have been given to local offices to make sure employees can adapt to the overall culture.

“One very important culture that Klook fosters which differentiates us from our competitors is we always take that extra step,” Eric said. “We do so by delivering a better customer experience, checking every detail on our platform, and prioritizing users’ needs by analyzing their feedback.” By ensuring the Klook team all shares the same team culture, it pushes the team to keep challenging the status quo.

Working at Klook

So how does it feel like working at Klook? Former interns from Klook highlighted that the hands-on experience they’ve gained during the internship has been valuable. With guidance from a full-time staff, interns can take ownership of projects to drive impact to the company. Interns can also rotate into different functions to learn about different perspectives in the operation of a travel tech business.

As for full-time members, other than having the opportunity to work with a diverse team, Klook also promotes cross-cultural collaboration opportunities in all offices. “To ensure staff have different perspectives and stay open-minded, we encourage and arrange them to work freely in any of our 13 offices…some staffs also leverage this benefit and plan their holidays by stopping by some other Klook offices,” Eric told us.

The employee benefits are not bad, right? Then the employee package for the following position at Klook seems almost too good to be true.

Klook disclosed earlier that they are planning to launch a Management Trainee programme this year, and aim to hire two trainees in Hong Kong by the end of this year. “The management trainees will be exposed to different functions of our business, ranging from business development, marketing, to operations including customer service,” Eric said. The management trainee position comes with an attractive compensation package, including opportunities to visit all of Klook’s offices in 13 locations across Asia, an unlimited period of leave, and a travelling subsidy scheme.

Personality traits to look for when recruiting talent

Looking to join the Klook team? The co-founder pointed out traits of successful staff at Klook:

Open-minded and astute

Like any other high growth companies, company structure at Klook changes constantly. Outstanding employees are open-minded, they quickly adapt to the new environment and put their knowledge into practice under the ever-changing environment.

Liable and enterprising

High-performing members of the team are the ones that start the ball rolling and take the plunge. They take ownership of their work regardless of the result. Staff at Klook are encouraged to take responsibility for their work and accept that making mistakes is part of the learning process.

Status quo challenger

Great employees always question the norm. They care about the “Why” behind all actions, ensuring the efforts are worthwhile. By challenging the status quo, it holds people able and enable them to bring new ideas and action to fruition.
