Our alums are passionate about the experiences they had on our campus, and they’re eager to share what they have learned with the next generation of Blugolds. We asked a few recent alums to give you some of their best advice as you look to your future. Take a look at some of the highlights below!

“Make an intentional effort to meet everyone who works in your office and close by. Even though it may seem excessive, I would recommend scheduling times to meet each person. Ask them what they do, how long they have worked there, and do your best to soak up this knowledge. You can learn from the experiences of others to do the best you possibly can!” — Mark Quamme ‘13

“I wish I had taken more initiative to create and lead projects while in college. Even if you’re the only one working on it, show initiative by starting a project outside of class and seeing it through to completion.” — Garrett Denney ‘11

“Get more involved with faculty and staff outside of my major as well as the Eau Claire community in general. There are so many opportunities for projects and collaborations across disciplines and I really wish I would have taken the time to pursue one or more of those opportunities. Additionally, there is an exciting community outside of the university with businesses and organizations who welcome help and input from students. Take the time to meet some people and find out how you can help them while also building up your resume!” — Tori Follett ‘11

“Right now be establishing great relationships with your faculty and peers. This is your organic network once you graduate. You can always get out and expand your network once you’re in the workforce, but while you’re on campus, sow these oats and keep these relationships for even after you graduate!” — Sarah French ’07/’09

“Buy your domain name (www.YourName.com). Write blog posts that are relevant to your line of work and post completed projects to show work samples. Nothing looks better than a clean personal website. Try a free account with WordPress to get started.” — Garrett Denney ‘11

“Take advantage of the great things at UWEC! This place has so much to offer and you don’t fully realize how great it is until you leave.” — Mark Quamme ‘13

This great advice is just the beginning.
