Selling Old Stuff in AR

Imagine an AR experience where users can inspect items you have for sale, and then negotiate with you over WhatsApp. Could be cool. Let’s try it out.

How it’s made

The scene consists of three items for sale. Each Item has a 3D model and a 2D panel that displays information about it. In the background, we also have a huge billboard - just for show.

3D Models & Styles

All 3D models were sourced from Google Poly.

Visibility

The 2D panels in the scene are initially set to invisible.

Binding

The 2D panels have their rotation bound to the camera, to make them easier to read.

Interactions

There are two types of interactions in this scene, gazing on a 3D object and tapping the buy button on an info-popup.

  • When the user focusses on a 3D object, its corresponding info-popup will appear, it also increases in scale a bit to emphasize it.
  • When the user looks away from a 3D object, its corresponding info-popup will reset to its default settings (i.e. hidden and small)
  • When the user taps on the hotspot defined over the buy button on an Info popup, it will open a WhatsApp URL. The WhatsApp URL format allows us to specify a phone number and message that we would like to launch a chat with. We can customise this message for each buy button.

Potential Improvements

This is a simple but effective example of how AR could impact selling platforms like eBay, Craigslist or Etsy. If we were exploring this as a standalone product, we’d want to allow the user to 3D scan the objects they have using the app and then upload them directly. We might also want to categorise them and maintain an accurate scale.

If you like that idea, feel free to pitch it to investors… I’m happy to be an advisor :-)
