Wibson: What we’ve learned so far

In October 2018, we launched the Wibson official data marketplace with the commitment of empowering people to control and monetize their data. One year since then, our philosophy remains the same but in this time we’ve learned a lot from our community feedback. Here are the improvements we are working on based on our findings.

“Don’t need a username” vs. “Please, I need a username!”

“A simple app where users don’t need to log in”. Yeah, we thought that: The simpler, the better.

But there were some issues to solve: how to get my WIBs back if I uninstall the app or I lose my phone? We listened to our community and one that was one of their biggest complaints. They told us that they needed a username and a password to have the possibility to recover their account and Wibson Tokens. So we are working on adding login functionality in a future update.

Wibson Reward Marketplace

Our community wanted a simpler way to exchange their WIBs, so we are working on a Reward Marketplace.

How does the app work?

  1. You sell your data
  2. You are paid in WIB
  3. You import your WIBs to an external wallet
  4. You trade your WIBs on an exchange

How will the app work in the near future?

  1. You sell your data
  2. You are paid in WIB
  3. You exchange your WIBs for other rewards in the app (if you still want your WIBs, you will still be able to send your WIBs to your prefered wallet or to an exchange)

Buyer SaaS

Until now, Data Buyers didn’t have a tool to create their own campaigns. We created the campaigns for companies based on their needs. Once a user sold their data, the buyer received it.

But we realized that Data Buyers need a platform to create their own campaigns using their own metrics. We have now a Buyer SaaS (Software as a Service) for companies, so they have a way to directly contact Data Sellers and manage their data buying campaigns. Stay tuned for more news, it will be launched soon.

V2 Protocol

One of the greatest challenges for the viability and scaling of blockchain networks is managing the costs of “gas”, the payments received by third parties for the verification of the smart contract transactions.

We realized that the marketplace wasn’t attractive enough for buyers because buying data was too expensive. To solve this problem we released our Batch Payment code, a new Ethereum blockchain protocol that reduces the transaction costs.

The batch payment code bundles a large number of ERC-20 token operations into a single batch of transactions allowing us to reduce gas costs by 99%. And it is open source! Any project with the same issues can implement it.

Conclusion

Our product is innovative and totally new in a world that is just starting to see personal data as a human right. We love the challenge we’re facing but we have always known it would be a difficult journey.

Last year we created the Wibson data marketplace and thought that everyone would understand it and like it. But we realized that we first need to know better the consumer to understand their needs. We understood that we need to improve our product, not only on the seller side but also for buyers to give them the opportunity to buy and sell data simply. Improving accessibility would empower users to profit from their data and companies to have a more direct way to users.

We want to continue educating people, governments and companies on data privacy and the importance of giving individuals control over their data and the possibility of participating in the data economy. Now, more than ever, we know we are on the right path.
