The importance of a convenient authentication experience

Apple has replaced Touch ID with Face ID in its new iPhone X, meaning facial authentication will almost certainly become more mainstream over the next few months.

Face ID is different

Despite the fact that facial recognition has been part of Samsung devices since Android version 4.0, Apple has always been a pioneer for the introduction of new technologies. It is important to understand that Apple’s facial recognition isn’t the same as Samsung’s. Unlike Samsung’s technology, where a special iris scanner is responsible to collect all necessary data, Face ID is instead using the shape of your face. As a result, Face ID will become easier to use because it doesn’t need to lock on any particular spot to work.

Biometric authentication solutions work

So will facial recognition replace fingerprint authentication? Most likely. And people won’t choose Face ID over Touch ID because its more secure, but because its the more convenient authentication process. Today mobile devices offer various biometric authentication solutions and people use and trust them for a simple reason — they just work very well. For an authentication process, the most important thing is that its accurate and fast. And with Face ID, Apple did make a large step in the right direction to make biometric authentications a standard.

Forgot your password?

We still have to remember our passwords for most services we use daily. And nobody likes typing passwords. More apps, especially apps where you need to go trough an authentication process every time you want to use them, should make more use of biometric solutions. (In the future we’ll maybe even have the technology to make authentication processes become invisible entirely. At least I hope so).

But right now, few apps make use of the advantages a biometric authentication does offer.

Biometrics provide an individuell identification with a 100% accuracy and are nearly impossible to forge. Biometrics credentials are always with you. You wont lose them. This makes for an easy installation and prevents fraud and abuse. They even reduce paper work and password reset costs which could lower administrative expenses all together.

A biometric authentication is not just a nice to have anymore. With facial authentication becoming mainstream, it’s time for apps to make a use of it and deliver the convenient experience the customer demands.
