It has been a while since I wanted to do a case study of a video game we created with 4 of my schoolmates back in 2010–2011 (Florian Zumbrunn — lead developer, Lionel Taurus — digital designer, Cécile Ormel — developer, Emilie Zawadzki — developer and me — digital designer). It was our final year student project at Gobelins, l’école de l’image (Paris).
I think it’s always interesting to see the process, the stages, the problems, and the solutions which led to the final result. Sometimes it’s even more interesting to discover the process of production rather than the final result. Especially for this project which I call an “iceberg project” type. It means what we see as a final result is just the tip part of the iceberg. Through these posts, I’ll present the submerged part.

To speak quickly about the context, at Gobelins during the final year, students are asked to create a digital project of their choice in 8 months (not full time, because we had other projects meanwhile, and we were all alternate 1 week at school and 1 week working in agency during these 8 months).
As we were free to do whatever we wanted, it all started by big brainstorming sessions to highlight problematics which could be interesting to solve, promising technologies to play with and things we really wanted to work on. After few days, we decided to create a video game. It was ambitious as we never had any game design training at Gobelins. But in the same time it was so exciting to be able to learn all the process.
Once we decided to create a video game, we needed to find what kind of game it’ll be and which technology we should use. It was obvious that we couldn’t do an AAA, as we were specialise in web with no experience in game design, but at the same time we wanted to go further than a “classic web game”. It’s how we decided to create a prototype of a video game with devices and technologies we knew best.
