7. The Devices

At this time of the project, we were still thinking to combine a gamepad with a nunchuk connected to a TV screen. We had a hard time trying to figured out how it could work in term of programming. Also, we noticed that it wasn’t optimal in term of game experience to mix this two devices : the gamepad and the nunchuk. On top of that, we received feedbacks telling us it wasn’t a smart choice to use a Nintendo product for our video game.

A TV screen synced with a smartphone used as a controller.

We decided to brainstorm to find a better way to play the game. We focused on what we were best at : designing website and mobile app. And the idea came like that : use a smartphone as a controller. Back in 2010, it was really innovative because nobody had synced a screen with a smartphone yet. Besides, in term of interactions and gameplay, smartphone offered thousands of possibilities by using touch interactions, microphone, video camera, buzzer, accelerometer, and the gyroscope. We could also use the smartphone as a way to present content about what the player will discover regarding the Norse mythology through the game. It joined our first idea with the book, so it was perfect!
