The WIE Tech Skills Initiative in partnership with Linux Professional Institute held on Saturday, April 29th, 2023 at the Linux Professional Institute. Hub. The event was themed, ‘NAVIGATING THROUGH TECH: Career Development in Tech & Interview Preparation for Your Dream Job.’

There was an amazing lineup of speakers that spoke on different areas of tech such as Data Science, Web Services, Software Development to mention a few. Our esteemed speakers, Paloma Peter-Dhozo, Fisayo Banjoko, Adedigba Oluwasegun, Ubaydah Abdulwasiu, Favour Olusoji, David Idaji and Damilola Alimi, definitely understood the assignment and delivered exceptionally well on their various topics.

Moderated by Ope Omole, the event started at 10:45am and the first speaker, Paloma Peter-Dhozo, gave her presentation. Paloma is a developer, technical content creator and technical community manager, she has experience growing and building developer communities from the ground up. She is passionate about block-chain technology and its application and does a lot of work to onboard, educate and support developers in that space through community initiatives, technical content, mentorship and courses.

Paloma enlightened the crowd on how to find the tech community, important things to look out for when searching for a tech community. She advised the crowd to collaborate with others, to document and share their experience and contributions in tech, to build relationships in and out of their community, to join the tech twitter community and also to set boundaries. She ended her talk by quoting the words of Odun Eweniyi which says “Take up space, be loud, be yourself. Whatever room you walk into, you deserve to be there”.

Fisayo Banjoko spoke next, she works as a Data scientist at Nerdy and is pursuing a master’s degree in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence from the University of London. She spoke about what Data Science entails and how to get started in Data Science. A graduate of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, OAU, and former WIE OAU President and IEEE Vice President, it was an honour to have her speak at our event.

The third speaker, Damilola Alimi, is a Mobile Engineer and Tech community leader with a passion for building and creating innovative solutions that drive positive change. With over two-year experience in software development, she has honed her skills in designing and developing mobile applications using the Flutter framework. Damilola explained what mobile application development was, the difference between native and cross platform app development, and how to get started with Flutter. She shared resources on books, online tutorials and tips on how to become a good developer, she also shared active tech communities to join and emphasised always taking advantage of every good opportunity.

Ubaydah Abdulwasiu is an Engineering student at the University of Ibadan, she is a Backend Software Engineer with a passion for developing high quality, scalable, and maintainable applications. She discussed the skills needed for backend development like programming language, databases, server-side framework, Application programming interface, version control, cloud services and security. She then listed step-by-step interview tips in the industry.

The next speaker was Favour Olusoji, a graduate of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Unibadan, currently a product manager at Seemless HR, she discussed product management, the requirements, and touted it as tech career where you require no coding skills and can make as much as a software developer.

She gave free access to her course on Product Management worth sixty thousand naira to interested attendees! Never one to turn down a freebie, I signed up. I have started the course and it is top-notch!!

David Idajili is a 500 level Student of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, he is an ex-META intern, incoming Bloomberg SWE. He discussed how to apply to tech companies, preparing for the various types of interviews, internships. One thing to note is David’s tenacity in pursuing opportunities. He mentioned that he applied to over 150 companies!He ended by sharing some resources on Data Structures and Algorithms.

The final speaker of the day, Oluwasegun Adedigba, is a final year student of the department of Mechanical Engineering. He is 2-time certified by Amazon Web Services with the recent being the AWS Solutions Architect Associate Certification. He is currently an AWS Community Builder and an Autodesk Certified Mechanical Designer. He discussed AWS career pathways, AWS Services, Growth, Networking and Interview Prep.

The event was exceptionally delightful, and at the end, participants were given the chance to ask questions, while those who took part in a brief quiz won prizes!
