This week saw the announcement of a new strategic partnership between WiFi Map and Chargefon. This represents the first official partnership of the new Web3 era of WiFi Map and an early use case for the $WIFI utility token, with several weeks still to go before the public sale begins.

Who are Chargefon?

Founded in 2019, Chargefon is a power bank sharing service with a network of 500 charging stations for mobile phones and tablets located in bars, hotels, restaurants, shopping centres and more. You can rent a power bank for a set period and return it to any charging station on the network, which currently covers some of the largest cities in the US including NYC, Miami, Portland and Orlando, and is set to expand massively.

How will the partnership work?

The partnership with Chargefon means you’ll be able to locate the charging stations and rent them within the app by paying with $WIFI tokens. Paying with $WIFI also means you’ll get a discount compared with payments made via credit or debit card.

The new partnership marks the beginning of a major overhaul of the functionality our community will enjoy in the WiFi Map app, with lots of new partner services on the way. Ultimately, we want WiFi Map to be a place where you can get online and then find everything you need whether you’re in your home city or on the move, anywhere in the world. We’re planning to bring public toilets, electric vehicle charging stations and much more onto the platform in the medium term.

Why are we doing this?

We want Web3 to be more than a buzzword used by people in the tech industry. We want it to mean something that people are able to understand and want to support, which means offering something tangible. Locating charging stations natively within the app will boost the flow of customers to Chargefon, and keeping people’s devices charged means you’ll stay connected when you’re not at home. This symbiotic relationship represents a new circulation of value powered by the $WIFI token, making it more than just a way of proving the utility of the token — it shows that $WIFI can bring value to the world. What’s more, we’re planning to install proprietary $WIFI routers at Chargefon’s stations, so you’ll be able to find power and connectivity in a single location.

What will the partnership achieve?

Keeping your device powered and staying connected are crucial to modern life and everything we’re trying to do at WiFi Map, so Chargefon makes perfect sense as our first Web3 partner announcement. More than this, however, the synergistic flow of value between our app and brick and mortar services is something we want to expand in the medium and long term. The cross-pollination between the $WIFI token and Chargefon’s power bank stations will be largely automated, making it totally scalable. In the very near future, you’ll be able to use our token to access all kinds of discounted services from within the WiFi Map ecosystem.
