5 Reasons to be Social in College

Communicating with everyone you see

College is one of the most unrealistic places to find yourself. Through heavily packed student schedules to indecisiveness of career choice, it may be tough to imagine that college interaction set the stage for your success. College is a microcosm of everything. Your university or college is its own Country, State, and City. There are norms and culture, which belong to your college that you contribute or mix into. Before, during and after college, people usually fall into selective categories. Most importantly, the person you are in front of your loved ones may not be who you are at school. We are social creatures and this form of adaptability and ways we act differently serve to help us become part of the groups that surround us. So what does this have to do with being social?

1st Reason to be Social

Save money- There are students behind every great organization at school. The university is socially run by students, and the more people you know the better off you will be. From having great friends who work in the cafeteria, to small talk at social events, I have met amazing people who have contributed to my academic success and even assisted me in obtaining a $10,000.00 scholarship I was awarded!

2nd Reason to be Social

Traveling- It’s the best part of being young without a career. I like to travel a lot with my girl friend and knowing a lot of people on your campus can be a huge help. I have many international friends who I have become amazingly close with. This makes spring break, vacations and traveling for them and myself a great experience. We are able to exchange connects and stay at places locals would know about or their homes. Part of not getting scammed is having local knowledge. Therefore building sincere relationships with people at school can benefit you in this way and many more.

3rd Reason to be Social

Classes- Sororities and fraternities benefit from certain aspects of being a part of such a group. One of which is having certain tools which come from past and current members. It’s as if the organization awards you( for your member fees of course) what socializing and networking could do for you. Members collect homeworks and exams from their classes to make it possible for incoming members to use these resources to do well in the classes. There are past exam’s categorized by subject and by teacher for the sorority or fraternity’s members to study more efecciently. This is a great example of the advantage you could create for yourself through socializing. So, what if you don’t want to pay sorority and fraternity fees for this? When you socialize with a classmates and other people, very good benefits come your way. I’ve had students give me tips about classes they have already taken. If you are extra social you may even make great connections when you are out and partying. Although many people think college is about partying and getting away from your family, that is the least beneficial aspect of college if you’re simply drinking and not taking advantage of the learning and people.

4th Reason to be Social

Sports- Now, a lot of people go workout or play some type of sport. I play basketball and workout, so when I first started to play basketball I was new and didn’t have many friends. I waited a while to play. I started talking to people and started playing more and more. From tips about health supplements to better workouts and even life long friends, having healthy and positive relationships with students who are motivated to succeed is terribly contagious. Don’t we all remember when your mom told you, “ you are who you hang out with?” It’s very true and if you’re lucky enough to know many people you can take the best and let go of the rest.
