Wikimedians from Asia-Pacific will be in Taipei, Taiwan, from 18–23 August, 2024, to discuss the future of digital rights in the region. We will join the Digital Rights in the Asia-Pacific Assembly (DRAPAC) pre-conference to foster solidarity with the broader digital rights community ahead of the formal discussions that will take place at the Asia Pacific Regional Internet Governance Forum (APrIGF). These events are timely as the digital landscape in the Asia-Pacific continues to evolve.

Members of the Wikimedia community and the Wikimedia Foundation are eager to contribute our perspectives and engage with diverse stakeholders on pressing issues surrounding digital rights, governance, and community building in Asia Pacific.

Multi-stakeholder Dialogue on the Future of Digital Rights in ASEAN

On Day 1 of DRAPAC, Rachel J and Rachmat Wahidi will join a panel for a Multi-stakeholder Dialogue on the Future of Digital Rights in ASEAN. This session explores the negative impact of digital repression including content moderation and invasion to privacy in Southeast Asia and how civil society can collectively challenge these worrying trends. This session is organized by Asian Forum for Human Rights and Development (FORUM-ASIA).

Cultivating Digital Rights Communities in the Asia-Pacific

Rachel Judhistari will be speaking at the closing plenary, Cultivating Digital Rights Communities in the Asia-Pacific. This session will delve into the challenges and opportunities of building robust digital rights communities across the region. As the Asia-Pacific is home to a vast and diverse population, there is a growing need to create networks that can advocate effectively for digital rights and influence policy at both local and international levels. Rachel will share insights on how to mobilize communities, foster collaboration, and drive impactful change in the digital sphere.

Multi-stakeholder Approach to Safeguarding Information Integrity through Advancing Internet Governance in Asia and the Pacific

This session will explore the regulatory approaches to address the challenges and opportunities related to safeguarding online information integrity in the region. The focus of the discussion will be on the various elections that took place in 2024, as well as the rapid development of artificial intelligence (AI). Speakers will consider how the multistakeholder approach (including by engaging governments, civil society, private sector, and academia) is the key to advancing progressive internet governance in Asia and the Pacific. Wikimedians will share how information integrity can be advanced by leaning on community-led governance models that are open to public participation and transparent.

Breaking the Silo: Streamlining Gender Safety in Digital Spaces

This talk seeks to address the escalating issue of online abuse impacting women, girls, and gender minorities through a ‘whole-of-society’ framework developed by The Dialogue. By promoting solutions that are both globally informed and locally relevant, the session will demonstrate how integrating diverse interventions under a unified framework can significantly improve the efficacy of combating technology-facilitated gender-based violence and advance safer online environments for all.
