The Wikimedia Foundation and Wikimedia affiliates will participate in a series of global convenings this June and July. We will join conversations at the intersection of open knowledge and artificial intelligence (AI), open source for the public good, and global internet governance. From New York to Geneva to Lillestrøm, we’ll be connecting with policymakers, advocates, and our partners to shape a more inclusive and equitable digital future.

UNESCO Conference on Capacity Building on AI and Digital Transformation in the Public Sector

📍 Paris, France
📅 4–5 June

This two-day event convened by UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) brings together governments, civil society, and international institutions to explore capacity building approaches for AI and digital transformation in the public sector. Wikimedia France will be attending to represent the open knowledge movement. Connect with them to discuss the importance of public interest technology and community-led AI innovations.

UN Open Source Week: Open Source Programme Offices (OSPOs) for Good

📍 New York City, USA
📅 16–20 June

The Wikimedia Foundation will be in New York City at UN Open Source Week, an event which focuses on how Open Source Programme Offices (OSPOs) can support the public good.

On 16 June we’re co-hosting an edit-a-thon in the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) chamber from 10AM–6PM EST alongside the Permanent Mission of Italy and the Permanent Mission of Sri Lanka to the UN, and Wikimedia NYC. Make sure you register for the event by June 3, 2025.

The edit-a-thon will bring together the expertise of those attending UN Open Source Week to update Wikipedia webpages and descriptions on relevant themes and key moments in the history of the United Nations. In particular, the event will contribute to webpages that help celebrate the 70th anniversary of the admission of the Italian Republic to the United Nations, as well as general themes related to digital public goods and open source technologies. Throughout the day, experts and mentors will assist participants in updating these webpages so as to publish in-depth, accurate reports.

Participants will need to have a Wikipedia account to edit. Please create your account prior to the event. Wikipedia usernames are public, so you do not have to use your real name: it is recommended to use a pseudonym or nickname as your username. We hope to see you there!

Internet Governance Forum (IGF) 2025

📍 Lillestrøm, Norway
📅 23–27 June

As preparations for the UN Internet Governance Forum (IGF) continue, the Wikimedia Foundation will be present in Lillestrøm to engage with global stakeholders around key digital policy issues. While we’re not hosting sessions this time, you can find us at our Wikimedia booth, where we’ll be sharing insights on knowledge equity, community resilience, and responsible AI use on Wikimedia platforms. In particular, we look forward to amplifying the importance of multistakeholder internet governance ahead of the WSIS+20 review in this important forum.

World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS)+20 High-Level Event

📍 Geneva, Switzerland
📅 7–11 July

Marking two decades since the first World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS), this high-level gathering is a key moment to reflect on progress made toward the recommendations from the first summit and recommit to building a people-centered, inclusive information society. The Wikimedia Foundation will be present in Geneva to highlight how free knowledge and Wikimedia projects contribute to digital inclusion, sustainable development, and the future of open infrastructure.

AI for Good Global Summit 2025

📍 Geneva, Switzerland
📅 8–11 July

Held in parallel with WSIS+20, the AI for Good Summit is a leading UN platform for discussing how AI technologies can support global goals. Wikimedia Foundation representatives will be sharing Wikimedia’s AI strategy, which provides a blueprint for how AI tools can be used to improve the quality and reliability of human-curated knowledge at the same time as advocating ethical, community-driven approaches to machine learning.

If you’re planning to attend any of these events and would like to connect with the Wikimedia Foundation, please reach out — we’d love to hear from you. Follow us on LinkedIn, Bluesky or X for updates from the road.

Let’s shape the future of the internet, together!
