Speaking your language is a basic human right, but half of the world’s 7,000 languages are endangered — and resources are scarce. Wikitongues was founded so all people can sustain their language.

We’re a non-profit powered by two employees, plus a team of interns and volunteers in more than 70 countries. By backing us, you’re helping us achieve independence, accountability, and stability.

What you’re supporting

LANGUAGE SEEDBANK

The vast majority of languages are under-resourced, so we’re collecting and safeguarding video samples and vocabulary lists in every language in the world.

LANGUAGE SUSTAINABILITY TOOLKIT

We work with the Living Tongues Institute to maintain a free toolkit for documenting, digitizing, and pass your language to the next generation.

LANGUAGE ACTIVISM WORLDWIDE

Wikitongues contributors are on every continent and speak languages such as..

Cornish, the ancestral language of Cornwall, which went dormant in the 1700s but is being revived by the people of Cornwall today.

Kenyan Sign Language, which Kenya’s Deaf community is using to create exciting content, from poetry to hip hop.

Lemerig, an Indigenous language from Vanuatu with only two known speakers.
