Meet the Woman Behind Aunt B’s Sewing Class, Vernita Francis
Tell us a little bit about the classes you offer.
My classes are for beginners to intermediate sewers to learn how to operate a sewing machine and select, read and use patterns. In addition, the class will go over the different fabrics and sewing techniques, like zippers, pockets, and buttonholes. Classes will not just be for clothing; I would also like to do home decor, for example, floor throw pillows, window valances, and seat cushions. In addition, I will soon be offering surface design classes, stenciling, painting, and fabric dyeing to showcase my creative side.
How long have you been sewing?
I have been sewing for over 20 years.
What made you decide to get back into sewing after your corporate career?
I was still sewing while I was working, alterations, prom dresses, but now I can spend more time with what I enjoy and get more projects completed. It has always been my dream to have a small sewing lounge where people can come and learn and enjoy the community. First, I thought this was crazy. I can’t do that, but then I thought, why can’t I? Sewing is a blessing, and I want to share it with others.
What do you enjoy most about your craft?
There are so many things I love about sewing; it is difficult to name just one. I enjoy it all from start to finish; you start with an idea or a pattern and with a beautiful piece of fabric, or an old shirt or an old pair of jeans, and the finished product is fantastic. I enjoy meeting fellow sewers and designers that share the same passion and want to share and learn sewing techniques and ideas. The best part is when my client loves the finished product.
What keeps you creating in Columbus?
I love the creative artistic vibe here in Columbus.
What advice would you give to beginners interested in sewing?
Be patient, take your time and enjoy the process and just go for it and do it. Creativity never disappoints.
