Today was truly magical. It was slow. It was simple. It was outside. It wasn’t perfect — not even a little — but it was just right.

We opened presents. And afterwards…

I experienced none of that sinking feeling, you know the one. The one that’s accompanied by thoughts like: “and now, at some point, I’m going to have to find space for all of this new stuff among all of the current stuff.”

There’s no nagging feeling, you know the one. The one that comes when you know days spent organizing boxes of toys and clothes to be donated are in your future.

There’s no guilty feeling, you know the one. The one that comes when bags of wrapping paper and tape are haunting you from the garbage can on the curb as they await their journey to the landfill.

I know it’s possible to avoid these feelings by making different choices, even when living a traditional lifestyle. Many of you, my inspirational friends, have shown me the way.

But the nomadic lifestyle forces new habits (one of its very many benefits, if I do say so myself). It demands simpler ways, shifted priorities, fresh perspectives, smaller footprints.

A 250 square foot home is far less forgiving of the little corners we all cut from time to time, the little things we let slide in the name of tradition.

And for that, I am truly thankful. Merry Christmas, everyone!
