Little Deer on The Prairie
The first in a series of stories centered on prairie landscapes and lives in North America
Dear reader,
The restored Oronoco Prairie has become my favorite place to hike and to observe wildlife and prairie wildflowers within five miles of home. Laura Ingalls Wilder (1867–1957) lived as a girl with her family for a while near South Troy, Minnesota. The settlement lies six miles northeast of Oronoco Prairie as the crow flies.
Ingalls Wilder earned fame for her Little House on the Prairie series of books for children. In memory of my fellow Minnesotan, I dedicate this, the first in a series of stories about the landscapes and lives of the prairies of North America, to her.
Following the pattern of the title of Little House on The Prairie, each story will be entitled in this format: [Adjective or Adverb] [Noun] on The Prairie. For example, watch for future titles such as Giant Bison on the Prairie, and Delicate Butterflies on the Prairie.
Laura Ingalls Wilder must have traveled through many scenes like those I enjoy on the Oronoco Prairie. I hope so.
