The Hoodoo Squad

In the tumultuous year of 2020, as the world grappled with the challenges of a pandemic, I found myself in dire need of an escape from the monotony of working from home 24/7. One morning, feeling burnt out and craving a change of scenery, I decided it was time for a spontaneous adventure. The travel restrictions had been lifted, and it was now a personal choice to explore the world. With a quick Google search, I stumbled upon the magic that was about to unfold — a group tour to Utah with Southwest Adventure Tours.

Booking the trip just a week before departure might sound impulsive, but in hindsight, it turned out to be the best decision I ever made. Amid the chaos of 2020, plagued by stress and the uncertainties of the ongoing pandemic, this last-minute getaway was a breath of fresh air. Southwest Adventure Tours emerged as my guiding light, and from the very beginning, they were incredibly helpful and attentive, patiently answering my barrage of calls about flight coordination and the feasibility of a solo adventure amidst the lingering pandemic.

Fast forward to November 9th, and I found myself embarking on the Mighty 5 tour from Salt Lake City. My guide, Chris Vander Wilt, quickly became the heartbeat of the trip — knowledgeable, energetic, and downright fun. The group dynamic felt like traveling with family, a surprising comfort considering I had embarked on this journey alone.

Utah, with its diverse landscapes, unfolded before us, and Chris’s expertise brought each section to life. The camaraderie among the group, dubbed the Utah Fam or The Hoodoos Squad, was infectious. Despite the initial nerves about joining a diverse age group, we quickly connected. The trip, which started with strangers, transformed into a tight-knit family.

One of the bittersweet realities of life is that it sometimes takes us on unexpected journeys. In our case, one member of the Hoodoos Squad, Rick, embarked on his next adventure. His passing left a void, but the memories of our shared moments linger on. Rest in peace, Rick — until we meet again on the next great adventure.

Rest in Peace Rick

Reflecting on this spontaneous solo journey, I can’t help but marvel at the unexpected connections forged amidst the mesmerizing landscapes of Utah. Southwest Adventure Tours not only provided a seamless travel experience but also created a platform for lasting friendships. To those feeling the weight of the world, I wholeheartedly recommend the joy of a spontaneous trip. You might just find yourself, like me, leaving with cherished memories and a newfound family in the Hoodoos Squad.
