Think about your strategy to maximize your investment — here’s how.

willu is now accepting hashtag reservations.

Conventional wisdom says that no one can “own a hashtag.”

Until recently that was true.

willu upends all of that. With willu it is easy to own a hashtag. You register it like a domain and pay for its use. How you use your hashtag — and its corresponding private SMS channel — is up to you.

Our experiments suggest that a willu hashtag is extraordinarily useful and flexible. Do you need to connect with all your followers on the fly (a single message sent to a group)? Do you want to foster private, one-on-one dialogue? How about reaching your audience quickly, easily, and without any competing noise?

We anticipate that willu hashtags will be used in very creative ways. None of that can happen until you register. So, we’re frequently asked, “How do I choose the right hashtag?”

The good news is: you can register as many hashtags as you like.

The bad news is: the best ones are going quickly.

Hashtags: Think Strategically

The best advice we can give is: think strategically. You want to own a tag that is specific to your goals. You might choose your personal name or business name. You might select a hashtag that describes your service. Or, you might go more granular and register a tag for each of services you offer or the communities you serve. Remember, you can always register more than one.

Here are guidelines for choosing the best hashtag:

Make your hashtag easy to remember.

Choose a hashtag that is specific to you. If your name is already registered you could append your hashtag with your area code (#202Donald), zip code (#Amy10026), or a mix-and-match of words (#BensEatery).

Make your hashtag easy to spell.

Make it easy for people to follow your hashtag. Spelling matters. If you want to register a commonly misspelled hashtag — or one with spelling variants — register both. For example: #Merica and #Murica.

Side note: Hashtags are not case sensitive. However, adding capital letters in your hashtags makes them easier to read when you share them.

Consider your cause.

A willu hashtag can coordinate groups of people. This is especially helpful if you are organizing people for a particular event. It’s also helpful if you need to share ongoing information to a group of people interested in the same outcome.

Think how you can expand into a second (or third or more…) hashtag.

A single hashtag is very flexible. At some point in the future you might want to create related hashtag for more specific services or updates. That’s why Ben, a food truck owner, should register #BensEatery first to reserve his hashtag. He can register #BensEaterySpecials once his audience warrants a separate channel (assuming no one else registers it in the meantime).

Reserve your willu hashtag now.
