Get more quality followers with this useful and easy-to-implement hashtag strategy for Instagram.

Have you seen those Instagram pages that have 30k+ followers, beautiful pictures — and every experience showcased seems like endless fun?

Well that can be you, too!

Taking your photos that are already well thought out and edited, and getting them in front of more people is now more possible than ever.

All it takes is time to create unique photos and hashtags that create a unique theme.

So, the next time you want more people to see that stunning sunset over Italy —try this out:

Identify commonly-used hashtags (+ a few niche ones)

As mentioned in our blog post How to Increase Your Instagram Followers Using the Best Hashtag Strategies and Techniques, we spoke about the difference between branded hashtags and community hashtags.

In case you didn’t have the chance to read that article, here’s a quick recap:

  • Branded hashtags are associated with a specific brand or marketing campaign. These will relate to you and your brand, such as #KimmieTravels or #MySanDiegoViews
  • Community hashtags are typically common or interest-based, such as #SanDiego or #surfing.

Let’s put this into practice:

  1. When traveling and posting images, for example— it is best to not only tag the location you’re at, but also use hashtags related to the area in your post, such as #VeniceBeach
  2. You can then use common hashtags that describe the activity you’re doing, such as #wine #food or #bike. The broader the hashtag, the larger the audience.
  3. Finally — add several more hashtags (up to 30 if you really want!) that target the most popular on Instagram (try using a tool like Hashtagify) and blend those with more specific hashtags such as #SanDiegosunsets.

Find others’ images via hashtags you used — then engage with their content

The purpose of finding others with similar content is so that you can engage in the comment section of their posts.

Once you do this, those users will likely view your profile and share some social love back by engaging on your posts. If they like what they see, they may be inclined to follow you.

Your goals is to connect with people and to make them aware of who you are. This will then begin a social relationship with that user.

The mindset to have is actually pretty straightforward: the more eyes you have coming back to your profile, the more followers you’ll get.

To implement this strategy:

  1. Search Instagram to find other users that have similar content, using the hashtags you chose.
  2. Comment on their posts and incorporate your hashtags. A natural combination of your branded hashtag(s) and your more specific hashtags will do the trick!

What’s great is that many of these followers will be of quality since you connected with them through similar content.
