We have learned to only accept standards and innovation handed down to us from outside. We have accepted the label of “Terra Incognita” rather than try to learn about our own land and markets. We are waiting for permission and help which will not come as assistance but disruption. We are waiting to remain a market rather than become a force.

By ignoring the simple and honest demands of the Super Falcons, the government allowed, unwittingly, all sorts of negative meanings-disdain for sports, gender insensitivity, and ethnic bias-to be read into its silence, and the danger is in the unspoken message to young people that Nigeria may not be worth the trouble.

A lot of people do not want to take part in the NYSC programme. That means there are people who will gladly give up the money government is paying them just to get out of the programme. Yet, government insists on paying them.

It might seem trivial but once you accept the profit motives of the colonial government then a lot of the decisions and policies start to make sense, and like every trading company the smart thing to do is to monopolize trade.

Of course, the modus operandi of the federal government is still the same. The goal? Profits, now renamed government revenue. The beneficiaries? The people in government of course…
