One of the most underrated factors responsible for a peaceful Lagos is religious tolerance.

“It would seem that no advanced civilization has yet developed without a government which saw its chief aim in the protection of private property, but that again and again the further evolution and growth to which this gave rise was halted by a ‘strong’ government. Governments strong enough to protect individuals against the violence of their fellows make possible the evolution of an increasingly complex order of spontaneous and voluntary cooperation. Sooner or later, however, they tend to abuse that power and to suppress the freedom they had earlier secured in order to enforce their own presumably greater wisdom and not to allow ‘social institutions to develop in a haphazard manner’”

I find it very amusing that Dangote Cement apparently sells the cement it exports from Nigeria at lower prices than it charges in Nigeria. How ironic is it that the citizens of other countries are benefitting from our industrial policy at our expense?

The Times can be relentless in questioning the diversity at other institutions; it has written about the white ranks of the technology sector, public schools, police departments, Oscar nominees, law firms, legislatures, the major leagues and the Ivy League. Fixing its own problems comes less easily.

Nigeria has everything: fertile land, great natural wealth, an abundance of intelligence and ingenuity . . . But oil has sickened its heart.

Does Twitter need better ways to teach people and help them to think about it the way the current user base thinks about it, or should it create and enable entirely new ways to use Twitter? I think this is the fundamental question — does Twitter need better execution or a new approach?

Corrections haven’t gotten as much attention, however. Corrections do not spread as fast or as far as the initial report. Corrections just aren’t as viral, unless they’re hilarious or sent to The New York Times Vows column.
