On February 9th, the NYC Chapter of WiMLDS, in partnership with BrainStation, women.nyc, and the American Association of University Women (AAUW), held a jam-packed event with live networking and a salary negotiation workshop. The event took place at BrainStation’s beautiful space in SoHo with over 60 attendees in different stages of their careers! Faye Penn, who serves as Executive Director of women.nyc and Executive Vice President of Initiatives at New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC), hosted the special AAUW 45-minute workshop.

The event began with Melissa Glazar from BrainStation who introduced the company and provided information about the full and partial scholarships that are made available to WiMLDS members. Then the WiMLDS team, consisting of co-organizers Ellie D. Norris and Melissa Barr, and volunteer F. Patricia Medina, described and encouraged attendees to join the NYC chapter before introducing the keynote speaker Faye Penn.

“Be objective. Be strategic. Be persuasive.”

Faye Penn guided us on how to build strategies to make the strongest possible case for a new job, a raise, a promotion, or better benefits.

Important points discussed and learned during the workshop:

  • The gender gap: This gap still exists and we need to build strategies to close it.
  • Articulating your value: Participants were asked to reflect on how to articulate their accomplishments, skills to achieve them, and concrete results in the previous position.
  • Salary negotiation: How to start the salary conversation. Participants were provided with samples and strategies to tackle the employer questions related to salary expectations and salary history.

After the workshop, participants gathered together for pizza and wine in a relaxed setting where we exchanged ideas, made new connections, and discussed further the points made at the workshop. The speaker very graciously addressed more questions from the phenomenal and engaged audience.

Conclusion

Attendees left with a refreshed sense of confidence, killer negotiation skills, and a new support network to help ensure they make what they’re worth. The engagement of the audience and the genuine commitment of the workshop host made this event a very productive experience for everyone involved.
