WiMLDS NYC: July 2021 Newsletter
Special Announcements
First Medium Article: WiMLDS NYC “Careers in AI” 2021 Virtual Kickoff Event with Dataminr
Two Reminders:
(1) We plan to publish a quarterly Q&A with a chapter member who would like to be featured on our new blog. If (a) you have just completed a certificate/degree or (b) you are seeking a career or job change, this platform may be a great way to publicize your accomplishments and goals.
(2) We are seeking one or more volunteers to assist us with virtual event administration through 2021.
Please reach out to us at nyc@wimlds.org if you are interested in being featured in a publication or fill out this form if you are interested in volunteering.
Inspiration Corner
Allie K. Miller is the Global Head of Machine Learning Business Development, Startups and Venture Capital at AWS and has over one million followers on LinkedIn! She was interviewed for the “Building career paths for women in AI” article.
In addition, Ms. Miller was recently featured in the IF/THEN Initiative’s latest project, #IfThenSheCan — The Exhibit. She and over 120 other AAAS IF/THEN Ambassadors have life-sized 3D printed statues displayed at Dallas’ NorthPark Center.
The Paris chapter of WiMLDS shared 7 key pieces of career advice from a meetup hosted in 2019. Although it was from a previous meetup, we feel the advice is still relevant and would love to share it with our NYC members as well.
🤹🏻♀️ 1 : BE FOOLISH! Take risks! You have to fail to learn things. Whatever your age, force yourself to do new things to keep learning.
🙏🏿 2. SEEK & GIVE HELP! You have something to share with others, and many people are willing to help you.
🙌🏾 3. PRIORITIZE YOU! You want to make sure you do things you love. Don’t sacrifice your company but make sure you work on what matters to you.
📣 4. ASK FOR MORE! More responsibility, more money, new missions, new opportunities, new things to learn.
✔️ 5. MAKE YOUR PATH! Follow your own path. Don’t be someone else, be yourself. Do what matters to you the way you want to..
🔝 6. RESPECT! You need to respect people and be respected.
😎 7. HAVE FUN! Whatever fun means to you. If you love dragons, then make presentations with dragons! And don’t forget to SHOW YOUR WORK on Github.
