WiMLDS X CCAI: Machine learning for cloud formation in climate models via Seattle Women in Machine Learning and Data Science

Date and Time: Friday, September 30, 2022 at 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM PDT

Speaker: Yakelyn Ramos Jauregui

Speaker Bio: I am a graduate student in the department of Atmospheric Science at UW, graduating in the spring of 2023. My Ph.D. research seeks to improve understanding of the across-scales air-sea interaction processes over the tropical Pacific. More generally, I am interested in the physical mechanism by which consecutive short-term ocean-atmosphere interactions over the equatorial Pacific can trigger El Niño Southern Oscillation. As a graduate student, I work alongside a diverse range of scientists from different backgrounds, which provides me with valuable learning experiences. In our department’s mentoring program, I am committed to contributing to climate education, outreach efforts, and mental health awareness. Outside school, I am trying to reinforce the Latinx/Hispanic representation in Earth and Space Sciences through outreach, mentorship, and networking.

Introduction to Storytelling with Data via Boston Women in Machine Learning & Data Science

Date and Time: Thursday, September 29, 2022 at 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM EDT

“How can we create effective data visualizations? In this introduction to storytelling with data, you will learn key guidelines and methods to create an effective data visualization. To start, you need to have a clear goal of what the data visualization is communicating and use good design principles to make it easy for the reader to understand. A communicative goal can come in different forms, such as a client brief, a learning objective, or data insights. A clear goal will help guide you towards the right type of visualization. Once you have a goal to aim for, you can use fundamental guidelines of what makes a good data visualization to help you design a visualization. Based on empirical research, the design guidelines of Decluttering and Focusing your visualization will guide your viewer into seeing the main conclusion quickly. With these key principles, we can create effective data visualizations to tell a story with data and engage your audience.

This event will be led by Elsie Lee-Robbins! Elsie is a Ph.D. candidate in the School of Information at the University of Michigan. Her background in Psychology is a foundation to understand the perceptual and cognitive processes of how people read data visualizations. Her research interests are data visualization, human-computer interaction, and decision making. Her academic research explores how to design effective communicative visualizations. She’s interested in how data visualization is used as a tool to communicate to a variety of audiences for a variety of goals.”

Organizations need to update their Go-To-Market (GTM) strategies to include external data and data architectures need to evolve to better incorporate external data into data pipelines.

This webinar will cover:

  • The evolution of external data
  • New technologies that make external data more accessible
  • How to modernize your GTM strategies to include external data”
