Dunlop dreaded New Year’s Eve. Year after year, the same parties, same people, the same binge drinking, and same hangover on New Year’s Day about which the only positive outcome was that if the bowl games sucked, you didn’t care.

But last year he changed that. He made one resolution and stuck to it. He’d embrace healthy living. Four days a week at the gym, two more in the pool, a paleo diet and biking to work. So this year, Dunlop resolved to do the same for his friends, who he’d seen far less than he would like since he woke up with his head in a toilet bowl and blood in his urine last New Year’s. Dunlop threw a workout party: “Health Over Hangovers.”

He e-vited all his friends, promising a full spread of healthy drinks and snacks — including kale chips, tofu chili, flax and chia seeds for munchies, and raw veggies with low-cal, low-fat dip. For activities he rented exercise bikes, weights, resistance bands and twelve hours of workout videos. No one showed, but on New Year’s Day he was buff, sober and primed for guilt-free snacking during the bowl games.
