BESS AND HER FRIENDS stood on the school stoop, waiting for the doors to open. As seven-year-olds do the week before Christmas break, they broke into mock carols. This morning it was “Rudolph the Green-Nosed Reindeer” followed by “Pink Polka-Dotted Christmas.” Her best friend Ruth added harmony.

When the bell rang, the girls giggled and moved toward the door, only to bounce into the second grade teacher, Battle Ax Brasswell, the meanest woman in Treeville (at least according to second-grade girls). “Show some respect. That’s not how you sing Christmas Carols.”

Bess straightened her back and perched her hands on her hips. Her book bag bounced against her knee. “Those are the words my sister Suzy taught me.”

The girls giggled and moved toward the door, only to bounce into the second grade teacher, Battle Ax Brasswell, the meanest woman in Treeville (at least according to second-grade girls).
