SPIELBERG ANNOUNCED HIS LATEST RELEASE the day after the strikes ended. Audience anticipation posts on social media went viral (one might say, ironically viral considering). Even though Amblin Entertainment planned to release the film on streaming and in theaters, advance ticket sales exceeded those for Disney’s Star Wars X, Death to the Skywalkers.
Spielberg’s comedy holiday horror film, Zombie Santa, would star Bill Murray as Santa, Kate Capshaw as Mrs. Claus¹, and special guest star Harrison Ford as an ancient Papa Elf. Will Ferrel, Cecily Strong, Keegan-Michael Key, Kate McKinnon, and Tom Hanks would make cameo appearances as elves. Taking the director’s chair was Jordan (aka Orange) Peele, with a script by (no surprise) Rob Zombie.
The plot centered on a virus imported to the North Pole when China’s COVID lockdown forced Santa to order raw toy materials from the Badger Corporation. Researchers had exposed the materials to a new variation of an experimental QAnon virus which Badger Corporation labs developed to alter the outcome of Presidential elections.
