He is no longer immobile
A couple of years ago, right after my release from hospital following intestinal surgery, my husband’s health took a rapid and devastating nosedive. A month before that time, he had started a period of leave from work, as his pain was unmanageable. So he was at home with me day in and day out. Unfortunately, I watched as his health disintegrated.
When he began his work leave, his joints and his back were sore. By the time I was released from the hospital, he’d taken to rolling up in a ball on our loveseat when resting, which was remarkably different than his usual position of sitting on his favorite recliner. That was when his problem first became clearly visible. But the pain continued growing. He was seeing his doctor as well as specialists — including bone, nerve, and arthritis specialists, on top of an eye specialist for another matter.
Nothing this group of people did alleviated his pain. One day, and I didn’t see it coming, he could not get up from the couch — at all. He was in so much pain he was crying. His pain medication had caused him physical harm (vision loss was just a part of it), and he was afraid to replace it with another.
