The Chicago Blackhawks have signed defenseman Jan Rutta to a one year, $2.25 million extention. The team announced the extension on their Twitter account Thursday morning.

Rutta, 27, has had an overall solid season for the Blackhawks. He leads the team’s defenseman in goals (6) and is second in points on the blue line (19). Injuries have put a damper on what otherwise would have been a nice rookie season, but Rutta seems to have found a home on the Blackhawks blue line.

Rutta missed 7 games when he was placed on Injured Reserve, but returned earlier last month, appearing in two games before dealing with another injury that has forced him to miss the last six games. He will make his return tonight, his first game since February 24th.

The signing comes just two days after the Blackhawks extended Erik Gustaffson. The team now has eight defenseman signed through next season, raising questions about what the team will do on the back end this offseason.

What do you think about this extension? Should they have let Rutta walk? Let us know in the comments below!
