3 things your friends are wrong about wines

1. Drinking 1 or 2 glasses of wine a day may prevent cardiovascular disease

Fruits and vegetables also have this effect.

Wine (mostly red) is so good for your health because it has antioxidants (phytochemicals), which will prevent oxidation of lipids (fats and oils) and cholesterol in human blood. If they oxidize, they may cause a buildup on the walls of the arteries. This buildup narrows the arteries, making it harder for blood to flow through. If a blood clot forms, it can stop the blood flow. This can cause a heart attack or stroke.

2. Some people suffer wine allergies

They can be linked to chemicals that enter the winemaking process. That includes pesticides, herbicides, equipment cleaning chemicals, and sulfite preservatives.

If this is your case, you could try drinking organic or biodynamic wines. They will usually have less chemicals than a regular wine.

“Red wines have more tannins than white wines”

3. Some people are allergic to red wines, but not to white wines

It may be caused by sulfites. One way of telling if this is the reason is by eating dried fruit. If it doesn’t produce any damage, then it’s not sulfites; because dried fruit has more sulfites than wine.

Another cause may be tannins. White wine doesn’t usually have any tannins, but red wine has high amounts of them. These people could test their allergies by drinking chocolate, tea and coffee, which also contain tannins. A solution may be drinking wine with low tannins, such as Pinot Noir, Gamay (French Beaujolais) or young wines made of Merlot, Carmenere, Tempranillo or Malbec.
