As you might tell already, I’m not into the snobby side of wine. (Don't get me started on sommeliers!) I think wine should be fun, it should be enjoyed, and it should be drunk, not saved for some special day 15 years from now.

My wine reviews are going to be light-hearted, honest, and with the goal of getting you to try something new and fun that isn’t going to cost you a fortune to drink on a regular basis. You won’t be hearing me ever describe a wine as “the quintessential wine with hints of cherry and lavender with a bit of cedar on the finish.” Blech, no thank you, this is supposed to be fun.

Here’s a sample of what these reviews will look like:

Vino (name of the wine): 2016 Epicuro Nero d’Avola

Bodega (winery): Femar
Goods (varietal): Nero d’Avola
Locale (where it's from): Sicily, Italy
Booze Factor (% alcohol): 12.5%
Fare (cost): $4.99
Whereabouts (where to buy): Trader Joes
Yea or Nay (rating):

Scoop (comments): I tried this wine at a friends house one night and I must say, for the price, it’s a steal. I finally made it back to Trader Joes and bought a bottle of each of Epicuro’s wines they had (Primitivo and Salis Salentino) and based on this first wine. I’m excited to try the others. I had also never heard of Nero d’Avola grapes so it was fun to try something new. Apparently, it is Sicily’s most widely planted grape varietal.

This wine was deep red in color, medium body, and very smooth. It’s full of fruit flavors and has a bit of a spiciness to it, which I really enjoyed. For $5 this is a pretty big wine. I’d serve this up with a nice big steak or some other kind of bold meat.

Until next time…

So that’s what you can expect from my reviews. I hope you have as much fun trying new inexpensive wines as I do.
