“A man who conquers himself is greater than one who conquers a thousand man in battle” said Buddha.

What does it mean to conquer oneself? To ask what it means to conquer oneself is to ask who the oneself is in the first place. Is it the thinking conscious mind?, is it the body?, is the sub- or un-conscious mind?, the super-conscious?, the soul or the spirit?, the collective consciousness?, is the whole Universe? In some ways, we are all of these, we are all of the Universe. If we believe the big bang theory, we were all One at some point before we have dispersed in space and time but we are still all connected, as the entanglement theory experiments prove in quantum physics or we are still all One, depending on the point of view and if that is so, a man who conquers oneself is the Universe who conquers the Universe, which is a battle of the Yin and the Yang, the two opposites. The Buddha’s promise of a possibility of conquering oneself, is a promise that the there is something more in this reality than just the two opposites and that’s a big promise. Far out, if you think about it.

Someone has posted the Buddha’s quote on a Tony Jaa picture on the Internet. Enjoy watching a short video of some of Tony Jaa’s stunts from his different movies. That’s certainly a man who conquered himself.
