How To Be A Gentleman

10 Ways to Be Gentlemanly

What is a gentleman, anyway?

“Things such as men who are polite, calm, and considerate are the cornerstone for defining what it means to be a gentleman. The most common perception of a gentleman is a man who ensures that he is chivalrous towards women. The term attaches itself to men who are courteous and treat women with respect.”

Why should y’all fellas give a care?

Ladies dig gentlemen.

Whether you’re looking for a good time or a good, long time, you’ll make her swoon, drool and lose her cool — in a good way — when you display chivalry.

By the way, men ought to practice chivalry with all women — all people — because these advanced manners (by today’s sadly low standards) impress everyone.

You never know when that could come in handy (like in job interviews or a promotion).

But just before we get into what a gentleman is, let’s squish what a gentleman is not: a door mat.

You’ve got a backbone, know who you are and what you stand for and while you portray the traits below, you also know that kindness doesn’t equal weakness.

Without further adieu …

How to be a Gentleman:

  1. Do open doors for her — car doors, building doors, opportunities’ doors. (Though the latter may be saved for when you’ve already won her favour.) This is a simple but impactful gesture. Dooo it.
  2. Do what you say you’re going to do. Text when you say you will, call when you say you will, show up when you say you will. This shows respect for her time. When you show her respect, she’ll respect you.
  3. Don’t play games. We’re not talking Pokemon, we’re talking head games. If you like her, say so; if you want a casual relationship, say so; if you’re looking for long term (in general), say so. Chicks dig straight-up honesty.
  4. Don’t avoid her friends or family. Dude, if you’re here, you’re looking for something serious. If she’s got the potential of being “the one,” then she comes as a package deal. If her friends and family give the thumbs up — high five!
  5. Do touch her in public. Wait, what? Hey, I’m not talking about inappropriate 9 1/2 Weeks stuff, but subtle gestures that let the world know you’re into this gal, like holding her hand to guide her through a crowd or run through traffic across a street. (A-ha! That was a test. Don’t run through traffic! Danger!)
  6. Do make sure she’s safe. If you’re dropping her off after a date, wait for her to safely enter the building; if she’s going home solo, text to make sure she got home safe. Bonus point: walk on the traffic side of the sidewalk. Double bonus point: physically guide her to the safe inside of the side walk by gently guiding her with your hand on the small of her back. (Remember: women’s primary need is to feel safe, but not controlled. Pay attention, and if she averts her bod, back off, Bud.)
  7. Do offer your jacket. Not to take home and alter to fit her. No, silly. Offer it if she shivers. You’ll get it back, I promise. ;)
  8. Do pull the car around or share your umbrella when it’s raining. No one enjoys running mascara or soggy hair, and guaranteed she’ll put in more effort than you did with either or both of these.
  9. Do protect her from creepers. Men feel manly protecting women; women feel womanly being protected. Everyone feels cared for when someone steps up for us when others aren’t.
  10. Do respect her opinions. You don’t have to agree with them — in fact, it’s better if you don’t always (agree) — but do care enough about her to show genuine interest and disagree kindly, respectfully, and even playfully.

And if you choose to buy her dinner — well, that’s the cat’s meow! As in … yeah, kind of a chivalrous staple.

How to be a Gentleman Takeaways:

Hats off to all the chivalrous gentlemen out there!

There you have it. Slam, bam, be a gentleman. (A gentleman would excuse this lame rhyme.)
