First to Fly

Many moons ago I wrote a book for kids about Orvill and Wilbur. I can’t let December pass without saluting their magnificent achievement, on the 120th anniversary of those momentous 57 seconds.

Few witnessed this epic feat on a cold blustery morning. After setting the world on a different course, the brothers calmly walked back from Kit Devil Hill to the wonderfully named Wright Bicycle Shop.

Then they wrote the equivalent of a ‘home safely’ text to their father.

“Success four flights Thursday morning … inform press home Christmas.”

Then it was back to wrapping presents…
