To Do or To Be?

Whether ’tis nobler to finish the deed,
Whether ’tis nobler to set the soul free,
Whether ’tis better to do or to be,
The reticent cosmos has yet to decree.

So we stand, ready to roll up our sleeves,
To mark our grand toils and dance with the leaves
’Til we gain the rewards we are fit to receive
And we subside to dust having been too naive —

We believed that work could complete a being —
A being whose work is never done.
