Citrus Heights’ ‘Lovers’ — review

Leeds-based indie pop band Citrus Heights are gearing up to premier their first new single since their 2017 EP ‘Honesty’ this weekend, with the srikingly sparkly ‘Lovers’ due out now!

The band, which is made up of vocalist Jamie Kelly, guitarist Benjamin Casey, bassist Matthew Dixon and drummer Luke Chambers cite Michael Jackson and Prince among their influences, and ‘Lovers’ displays how Citrus Heights wear their influences on their collective sleeve.

‘Lovers’ gives the listener a 1980s-flavoured explosion of groove and funk, boasting squeaky clean production, a rock solid rhythm section and incredibly encapsulating and smooth vocals. ‘Lovers’ is the kind of a song that’ll make a listener both want to grab their dancing shoes, or enjoy a nice fruity cider in the summer sun. The track is just shy of three minutes long, which makes it ideal for your favourite playlist, or beer garden summer sessions. Citrus Heights have been called ‘a band who could quite possibly be the sound of summer 2018’ by BBC Introducing’s Alan Raw, and after hearing ‘Lovers’, you wouldn’t be surprised if statement became reality.
