DAS Solutions, Smart City Applications Among Products Announced at Mobile World Congress
The wireless industry converged in Barcelona this week for Mobile World Congress 2018, where the latest and greatest phones, gadgets, solutions and applications made their debut. Among the buzz at the conference that annually draws more than 100,000 attendees were announcements from vendors and infrastructure companies about DAS solutions, virtualization and smart city applications.
SOLiD GENESIS DAS
SOLiD introduced its compact, 5G-ready GENESIS DAS to meet the needs of the middleprise and other large venues, such as airports, subways and stadiums. GENESIS DAS delivers an enterprise-ready solution that can be used out of the box and provides support for structured cabling solutions to reduce installation time and costs. In addition, the solution provides support for either GENESIS RAX as a signal source or other industry standard in-building signal source platforms and a clear upgrade path for existing customers with the remote radio and amplifier units being compatible with the legacy SOLiD ALLIANCE platform.

CommScope showcased its next-generation in-building platform, CommScope Era, an all-digital C-RAN antenna system that leverages wireless operators’ initiatives to centralize and virtualize baseband radio assets. Era enables operators to deploy a centralized headend that serves multiple buildings, or even to tap capacity from the operator’s existing centralized radio access network (C-RAN) hubs. Era’s innovative Wide-area Integration Node (WIN) resides in the C-RAN hub and routes baseband capacity to a distribution point within the served building or campus. Era allocates baseband capacity where it is needed while reducing the amount of onsite head-end equipment and the amount of fiber needed for signal transport by up to 90 percent.

JMA Wireless Adaptive Baseband Platform
JMA Wireless announced its XRAN Adaptive Baseband platform, which provides all of the RAN functions necessary for complete LTE mobile and IoT connectivity. XRAN is designed to scale to commercial networks on off-the-shelf server technology.
The XRAN software platform integrates with the TEKO RF Distribution platform via high capacity digital fiber connectivity, eliminating costly layers of analog equipment and cabling, and significantly reducing footprint, power and cooling requirements. This combined solution provides a new approach for wireless systems in enterprise buildings, large venues and highly densified areas of cities.
JMA’s XRAN software is being used in a live dense urban network application with Telecom Italia Mobile as part of collaborative work between the companies on 5G mobility innovation.

Zinwave DAS Solution
Zinwave rolled out its next-generation DAS solution, UNItivity 5000, which has evolved Zinwave’s patented DAS technology with several key improvements including energy efficiency. Depending on the scope and complexity of the DAS configuration, Zinwave enterprise customers can expect to see up to 17 percent energy savings using the new UNItivity 5000 solution, the company said.
Another update to UNItivity 5000 is the slim design of the secondary hub, which can provide up to an 80 percent space savings in the IT closet. The streamlined design also integrates the power supply unit into the hub itself, which saves IT staff the hassle of procuring an external power supply while providing additional space savings.

American Tower, Citybeacon partner on smart hubs
American Tower and Citybeacon announced a global alliance to accelerate wireless densification and enhance city services. The companies are developing a connected smart hub that enables smart city applications and provides shared wireless infrastructure for a complete, multimedia digital city experience.
The smart hub is designed for cities to communicate with citizens more effectively, ensure the safety and security of public spaces, use data to enable smarter decision making and provide reliable and robust connectivity.
