What We’re Looking Towards This January at WBC

This weekend’s full moon, the first of 2023, was a “micro-moon.” While the days are getting longer (slowly) this month, the moon is further away from earth. I have a friend who calls this the “ January slump.”
While some of us at WBC are prepping for the new semester, I’m writing this month’s Moon Times at 28000 feet, just a tad closer to the moon than the rest of the collective. I spent the days of new to full moon consuming round foods — pancakes, omelettes, vegan burgers, chocolate chip cookies, and oh-so-dangerous-gluten-free pistachio cake while reading Everything’s Changing — a surreal flash chapbook out this month by Chelsea Stickle.
I remembered that the moon was only bright white because it reflected the sun.
Stickle writes in a flash story about the dullness moon rocks and the vibrant glow of moonstone gems. I also obsessively searched Red Memory at various independent bookstores the way someone might Google themself when the “January Slump” arrives.
Today, we got word Marlie’s A Body Made of Eyes has made it to it’s final proof. It should go to print in the next week. Ada McCartney is working on plans for WBC at AWP this spring in Seattle while prepping to launch a podcast: FEMME ON Poets. Our chapbook series In Process is looking for the perfect spring manuscripts, and much like the weather, life is chaotic. Stephanie Michele lost her job on the full moon. What that might mean, we don’t know. She’s walking off grief alongside the moon. Emily has just moved to a new home. It’s a Cold Moon, Hard Moon, & Severe Moon.
