Massive pizzas, beer flowing and great technical discussions. That is the summary of the 18th JVM Roundabout, hosted here at TransferWise. Thank you to everyone that visited our offices in London, we really wanted to create an event that everyone could enjoy and ultimately learn at.

We had around 100 people attending the meetup and two speakers, talking about the topic of the night: Async/Reactive Programming. I was the first one presenting; my talk title was: Non-blocking Database Connectivity (NDBC), a fully async alternative to JDBC. I talked about how NDBC architecture was designed to provide a high performance, non-blocking connectivity to your database.

Spreading the word about async/reactive programming with NDBC

The second speaker of the night was Derek Mok, Senior Software Engineer @ThousandEyes, who presented “Not a Chat App — How we use websockets to move to a fully reactive architecture”, describing how Reactive Websockets enables Thousand Eyes to deliver value for their customers, and the lessons they learnt along the way.

Derek, about reactive and websockets

Both advanced topics show what we can do in the JVM environment. If you missed the meetup, no worries! Here is the video, enjoy the talks:
