Writing about alcohol addiction, trauma, and emotional pain and how they affect our bodies, minds, and souls has always been a journey fused with both a personal and professional angle for me on this platform. Yes, I aim to educate and move things forward by arming people with knowledge so they can make informed choices about their health and wellbeing. Education is an excellent place to start because we don’t know what we don’t know. However, once we know, that doesn’t always move us forward. Addiction and trauma come from pain and result in pain. What we do with pain is a wild, complicated human ride. All of our coping and self-soothing and need for escape makes perfect sense when pain runs deep and long with no relief in sight.

We know that alcohol addiction is more prominent in those who have experienced some form of trauma or adverse childhood event. We know that alcoholism causes 4% of deaths in the US and that alcohol addiction has increased dramatically since the pandemic. We also know that alcohol causes a variety of serious health and mental health issues that affect quality of life. And so even when we use it to numb pain, we are also creating more pain as well.
