I’m 62. I Feel 42. Here’s How.

I turned 62 last week, and physically I feel much better than when I was 52. In fact, my body works a lot like it did when I was 42. I may be a little slower at running. OK, a lot slower at running. But I’m free of the chronic back pain that for years made running a no-go. I’m more flexible, and in many ways stronger than two decades ago. I sleep better than ever. I am happy. And I’ve got plenty of physical and mental energy.

I feel good. And you can, too.

Four choices have combined to cultivate my transformation from a mediocre midlife period, healthwise. None of them involve surgery or supplements or special programs or pills of any kind. And I’m not fanatical about any of this—I lean into healthy behaviors with mild to moderate intensity.

Here’s what changed:

  1. I escaped the corporate world, so I have less stress and more time to pursue work and life activities that matter to me. I still put in long hours at my work, but I love what I do (writing and editing) and when I step away from the work, I have more energy for the rest of life.
