How much would you expect to pay for a hip replacement surgery? Got a number in mind? If you thought $15,000, you would be correct. If you thought $120,000, congratulations, you are correct as well.

That’s the US healthcare system.

It gets worse.

If you have a sudden onset of low back pain, what care should you receive? Some doctors will immediately order an MRI, show you the supposed cause (most of us have some level of degeneration), and recommend surgery. The doctors who follow treatment guidelines published by the American College of Physicians or the VA/DoD will recommend a gradual resumption of physical activity and potentially prescribe physical therapy.

The costs and impact on your life differ dramatically.

Why does this happen and how do we stop it?

As a physical therapist and US citizen, I have first-hand experience of the brokenness of the healthcare system, having witnessed issues as a provider and consumer. I have been negatively affected on both sides. I feel your pain and have been searching for answers for the past 10 years.

The price we pay
