Each of us touches the lives of other people. We touch them with our love, our compassion, our laughter, our encouragement. We touch them with our thoughtfulness — preparing a meal, helping with a move, sitting with someone who is sick or dying. It is these, and many other ways that we make others’ lives better. It is a part of being human.

At times, we also touch others by hurting them. Hurting others is also a part of being human. Not one of us can live a life that spares us the experience of causing others pain. No matter how hard we try to get it right, to tread carefully, to say the right thing, to make the right decisions, to think before we react, we will still fail over and over again.

We all have moments when we can’t see we are being selfish. We can’t see that the thing we are doing, or not doing, is causing harm. We all have moments we are blinded by anger, or are desperate to be free, or need something we aren’t getting. These are the times when we are more likely to hurt others, especially those we are closest to.

This is one of the hardest parts of being human. When we do something that breaks someone’s heart…
