Medium

What Do We Have Here?

If you know me, you also know I enjoy being online. And as being online goes, you get to see and try a lot of tools. Medium is one of those tools that has been on my radar for a while now but I didn't have a place — rather use — for it.

Inspired by Chiira, I wanted to get a new place to write online away from those blogs of old — WordPress became too big anyway. It needed to be simple enough and presentable (a reason Tumblr doesn’t qualify).

Enter Medium. These guys look like they’re still looking to find their footing online and I use that expression as loosely as possible. They offer a basic platform with just the tools I require. Most of all, everything works out of the box. For setup, all I needed to do was hook it up to my Twitter.

There are various concerns about this platform. The simplified setup means less granular control but if the basic needs are met, one can learn to give that up, no? The other concern would be how long this platform is likely to last. A lot of small, clever online ideas close shop just when they are gaining traction. I hope they don’t. But to console myself, at least they have an option to download all posts in a *.zip file to take away elsewhere.

So let’s see if Medium is a good place to write.
