Where do your ethics lie when it comes to love?
Casting spells for love is one of the most popular forms of magick used in witchcraft. But is it ethical?
Ethics refers to society’s sense of the right way of living our daily lives.
Ethics are essential to help you establish rules, principles, and values that you can base your conduct on.
What comes to mind?
When you think of casting a love spell, what comes to mind? Is it creating love potions or sachets or hexing your exes? Love magick is easily often blown out of proportion in various media outlets when it comes to heartache, romance, and self-love. And as dull as it may sound, taking time to think about where your ethics lie, is important to understand when you involve another person.
Do you believe that it’s unethical to cast love spells, and in doing spells similar to this, you’re trying to take away another’s free will? Or do you believe casting these love spells to be similar to just catching someone else’s attention by any means, and it’s not harmful? This is a decision that needs to be looked at with a magnifying glass.
While I personally don’t promote casting love spells on others, it’s important to look at all sides of the situation. I have a Wiccan background, and every time I plan a spell, I can still hear the Wiccan Rede, “An’ it harm none, do as ye will,” ring in my ears. I’ve taken the time to define my code of ethics concerning love magick and what it means to me.
Will you stick to your guns?
I’ve seen many who think love magick is unethical, but when a love situation arises, they dive headfirst into spellcasting on others. In this case, it’s important to stick to your guns.
When casting spells for love, it is easy to ignore spell ethics and also to be driven by our emotions. Extreme emotions can prompt us to do extreme things.
Love can make us crazy and warp our view of what is right and wrong in the blink of an eye. It is imperative to reflect on your ethics about this matter beforehand and decide what is right for you. Ethics of any kind are essential to your practice before you get yourself into a sticky or questionable situation.
To do this, clearly define your morality regarding love magick before you need it.
Rooted in history
If you look to history and old forms of magick, you will most certainly see different types of love magick and spells from hexes to potions. Love magick isn’t rooted in evil or sinister. It’s often contained in a gray area due to your own need for right and wrong. It’s a form of magick that’s rooted in conjuring and celebrating love.
According to Egyptologist J.F. Borghouts in Ancient Egyptian Magical Texts (1978), love rituals have been inscribed on ostraca or tablets since the 11th and 12th centuries BCE.
Magick helps us gain control in areas of our lives which may feel like utter chaos.
Does that remind you of any of your relationships? I know it did for me.
Have I wanted to hex someone? Yes. Did I? No. Have I worn a love sachet in my pocket to attract romance? Yes.
Finding where your lines are is a significant yet personal choice when practicing love magick. Take as much time as you need to decide where your ethics lie.
