Hot decaf all over
The office admin yanked the basket out of the coffeemaker.
“How did you manage to …” She dumped the grounds, and put the basket on the counter.
“overflow the coffee basket all over the counter …” She separated a single coffee filter, and inserted it into the basket, ripped and dumped a new decaf packet.
“two times in a row? Did you put in two coffee filters? Twice?” She pushed in the basket and punched the red button. Boiling water began to spray on the coffee grounds.
“Well, at least you clean up your own messes.” After a moment, decaf coffee began to overflow the top of the basket, onto the counter.
She reached the “Cancel” button before I did, holding it for the required 2 seconds to stop the machine, while hot decaf kept flowing on the counter, heading for the floor.
“Gee, I’m really sorry, I really thought you were just doing something stupid. You go back to work. I can clean this up.”
Aftermath
Our coffee vendor sent us oversized filters that folded over when you inserted the basket, causing the coffee grounds to plug the basket. Next they checked the temperature of the coffeemaker. Two weeks later they sort of admitted that maybe Starbucks decaf coffee might have done something like that before, and refunded us for the remainder of the box of decaf pouches.
Now we use Swiss Water Process decaf from a local coffee roaster.
