We pivoted. It’s working, and I couldn’t be more thrilled to tell you all about Encore’s next chapter and why we’re so excited by the challenge of building the operating system for Hollywood’s next Golden Age.

So, let’s dive in 👇

Hollywood represents an old-line industry.

Its roots go back to the late 19th century. It has gone through an immeasurable number of changes. Its challenges are well known and they’re deeply ingrained in its culture.

Its challenges impact every stakeholder — significantly.

The film and television industry spends over $150B a year, yet its infrastructure is outdated and inefficient, with a huge reliance on paper checks, statements, and spreadsheets.

Millions of hours. Wasted.

The elephant in the room is Transparency (or a lack thereof).

Information in Hollywood lives in a thousand different places, and that makes it difficult for stakeholders to be on the same page. These systems just don’t speak to each other.

Questions aren’t easily answered.

Even the simplest of workflows are complicated.

With the exception of a few, the products in Hollywood are from the web 1 era and they are showing their age. The UX resulting from this is unnecessarily inefficient and burdensome.

Hollywood needs a better solution

But more on that soon. Why did we abandon the white hot opportunity of building a cash flow management platform for digital creators?

1. We wanted more impactful challenges

While digital creators absolutely face challenges, from what we experienced, they are largely solvable with commodities. These opportunities existed because incumbents were absent.

Distribution became more important than product.

2. The environment was changing. Fast.

Digital creators are largely dependent on ad dollars to stay afloat and the market is slowing to a drip as Mahira Dayal recently emphasized:

3. The digital economy is going to take a hit

We saw this trend emerging earlier in the year and took steps to ensure our company would weather an economic downturn and come out the other side in an even stronger position.

Enter: Hollywood

Hollywood is recession-resistant.

Consumers gravitate towards forms of traditional entertainment to distract themselves from difficult times. They might not go on a trip, but they’ll still pay for smaller things that bring them joy.

Like a movie ticket or subscription

So, that’s what we’ve been up to at Encore.

Hollywood is an industry ripe for change and we want to be the pioneer of that change. At Encore, we want to make Hollywood more efficient, more transparent, and more egalitarian.

We’ll be sharing more over the coming days, but if building the operating system for Hollywood sounds like an opportunity you’d be excited about, we’d love to chat with you!
